What to Expect:
The Yachtmaster Offshore qualification is often the pinnacle of an aspiring sailor’s ambition, or perhaps it might be that giant stepping stone forwards for your future career at sea. To undergo this challenge you must be suitably experienced with the qualification enabling you to work as master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt unto 150 miles from a safe haven. The Yachtmaster can be taken under sail or power.
The Preparation course is designed to fine tune the vital skills and receive tailor-made tuition according to your needs, this is a polishing your skills course and is not designed to teach you new skills.
Duration: 6 days in total, 4 days preparation covering all skills, followed by the exam which takes 8 to 12 hours per candidate.
Ratio: Maximum 5 to each boat and instructor, minimum of 2 people.
Prerequisites: 50 days, 2,500 miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles measured along the rhumb line from the port of departure to the destination, acting as skipper for at least two of these passages and including two which have involved overnight passages. 5 days experience as a skipper. At least half this mileage and passages must be in tidal waters. All qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam. Must hold the GMDSS or higher radio certificate and valid first aid.
Course includes: Food whilst onboard the yacht, breakfasts and lunches. Mooring fees are paid and waterproofs provided if required.
Certificate: If the candidate has passed the course an application form is completed at the end of the course and certificate sent from the RYA to your address. A passport photo is required.
Timings: 09:00 on the first day, the days can finish late as you need to complete night work
Venue: Marina Vela, central Barcelona.
Course Extras: RYA exam fee of £214 (this is not refundable of unsuccessful completion). Suitable clothing for being out on the water, sleeping bag, pillow and towel.
